Gear Up Girl, a Bicycle NSW initiative organises riding events and workshops to support and encourage women into riding. They organise an annual event called Gear Up Challenge for girls.
This year the event had 2 choices..
The Challenge Ride which is a 40km ride from Sydney Olympic Park to Cronulla + an optional 20km beach ride from Cronulla to Kurnell loop
The Beach Ride 20km ride from Cronulla to Kurnell loop
I took the challenge ride with the optional 20km, aiming for a total of 60km.
Starting at 6:30am from Sydney Olympic Park, rode along with the early riders towards North Strathfield, Homebush west, South Strathfield and followed the Cook’s river to Rockdale, Brighton Le-Sands, Ramsgate Beach, Dolls Point, Taren Point, Woolooware Bay, Kurnell and crossed the finish line at Cronulla tracking a total of 66.6kms in just over 3.5 hours.
The whole ride was scenic and mostly on the bike paths. The couple of places that you either had to merge the road or cross the road there was either the volunteers or the police helping the riders through.
The ride along Ramsgate was very beautiful with lovely beach views. Past Brigthon-le-sands you can also see the planes taking off and landing which was pretty cool.
Expect about 3 or 4 small hills, one at Taren Point bridge another at Cronulla near the finish line. The others are all easy and conquerable. The rest of ride is all along easy and compatible for novice riders.
I absolutely loved the volunteers cheering up the participants at each major junctures and informing how far the rest of the ride or the next pit stop is. The pit stops are very handy with water, toilets and coffee truck. But take my advise and keep off coffee during the ride as caffeine dehydrates your body! Opt for water instead!
The finish line was a party atmosphere with food and trainee Chiropracters from Macquarie uni giving free assessment, massages and required adjustments.
The only thing I thought is missing is free food (oh yeah we always love free food, don’t we) and also volunteers werent there for early riders. So if you are starting early, you might have to figure the way out.
This is the first time I have participated in this ride, definitely loved it and am going back next year.
